Is Free Will Real?

What is free will?  Does it actually exist or is it made up for us?  Is it just an illusion to say that we have choices?  These are probably questions you or someone you know may have been asking themselves for awhile now.  And this is a good question.  If free will exists, how can we tell when there is an all powerful omnipotent and omnipresent being who knows all and is watching all that happens?  The thing is, the answer may be more simple than you think.  I have two possible explanations on why free will may be possible even with an all knowing being such as God.

First Theory

When you think of the world, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?  Some may call it God’s perfect creation, and other look at it as our home world.  But there is one thing that we all notice.  It is ever changing.

One of the things to note about the world itself is that it’s constantly changing and so are we, the animals and insects on the earth.  However one thing that doesn’t change is God’s love for us.  God’s love endures forever (Psalm 136:1, Isaiah 54:10).

The best way to described what I’m about to say is with this manga.  In this manga, there was a person at death’s door, about to let himself die.  However, he had ended up awakening an ability gifted to him.  This ability was called prescience.  It allowed this person to see multiple different futures.  He even saw that at certain points, the main character could have die.  Though lucky those specific futures didn’t happen. However, in many futures he saw the main character dying to the main antagonist.

This leads me to the first theory.  It is possible that God’s see all the possible actions that we choose and can and will take.  And I say this because of these three Bible passages, Matthew 24:24, Psalms 69:28, and Revelation 22:18-19.  This seems to me to imply that there may be some chance to have your name taken out of the book of life.  Though I know that most say that isn’t the case and is impossible.  Even if there is a small chance that it is, then might be possible to save someone or for someone to fall to sin.  So it’s best to keep yourself on the right path.

Second Theory

While it is possible that God is looking into at all possible outcomes, there’s also a chance for it to be something else going on.  Think about how God is the creator of our very souls.  It would mean our souls were always close to God.  And would know the warmth and love He has for us.

This leads to my second theory.  That before our soul enters the universe, we would choose to be with God.  Because we would only know of His warmth and love, it would be the only choice we would want to make.  However, that wouldn’t be fair to us as it would feel like it’s our actual choice.  So regrettably, God lets us go and have an actual life in the universe.  To choose where we want to go.  And because God sees all, he can already tell where we will go once our soul is in the universe.

This can still play into the first theory.  God may actually see all possible outcomes even before said soul enters the universe.  But once the soul enters the universe, He sees its chosen path.  He may still try to turn them away from said path to no avail.  It is their choice.

There are still mysteries to figure out.  Like how does God know when certain people will be born and when everything will be.  The answer I have for that is this.  There are certain souls who will always choose God, while there are others who will always reject Him.  These souls that choose to love God always (the elect), they have so strong a love for God that they always find a way back to him no matter what.  While they may have some souls who always wanted to be away from God even before birth.

However even though the elected will always chooses God, that doesn’t mean others cannot or will not be saved.  As Jesus says in Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”  This may show that even if you have a slim chance to choose the path towards God, there is still a path for you to Him.  You just might have to make sure you follow it.

Think about the one we call Lucifer.  He was considered so perfect, that even God acknowledge him.  However, because he was perfect in wisdom, he was freely able to choose to go against God.  He even went to a third of the angels and also most likely gave them a choice.  This shows how free will is a gift, and a curse.  Free will allows us to live our life the way we want, but many of us are bound to do evil acts as well.

Lucifer actions are to show that anything we might think is perfect besides God, isn’t actually perfect at all.  Only God is, will, and always was perfect.  None of us are perfect.  But even in our imperfect ways, we are loved.  So it’s best to follow Jesus example as best as we can, and heed his warning.

I might not be completely right in all of my assumptions, but I hope you find the truth and follow it with all your heart.

Psalm 136:1: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.”

Isaiah 54:10: “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.”

Matthew 24:24: “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.”

Psalms 69:28: “May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.”

Revelation 22:18-19: “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.”

Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
